The Republic of Mozambique is located in southeastern Africa, and has an extensive coastline on the shores of the Indian Ocean. It has a population of over 27 million people and an area of over 800,000 km². A former Portuguese colony, Mozambique gained independence in 1975. Our projects are concentrated in the Ibo District.

Despite having reached a certain level of political, economic and social stability that has accelerated the country’s development after a long civil war, Mozambique continues to be one of the poorest and most unequal countries in the world.
It is in 181th place out of 188 countries in the Human Development Index ranking. It is therefore important to offer some facts and figures that explain the worrying situation in this African country.
The Ibo District is part of the Quirimbas Islands, an archipelago of around 50 small coral islands located in the Cabo Delgado province, off the northern coast of Mozambique and towards southern Tanzania. Its capital is Ibo Island.
The Quirimbas National Park has recently been added to the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves.
Ibo spans six districts in the Cabo Delgado province, covering a total area of 7,500 km2
Ibo, the largest and most populated island in the District, became the capital of the province and is home to many examples of colonial architecture. Unfortunately, much of this is in an abandoned state and at serious risk of ruin, although over the past few years, recognising the potential of this cultural heritage has been a key factor in the development of sustainable tourism .
Ibo Island has many ideal conditions for the development of projects that make the most of its current situation, and contribute towards reaching its goal of total self-sustainability:
- It is an island of a moderate size with barely any external influences.
- Its population is small but stable.
- 40% of the population is under 14 years old, and therefore, any initiative in the short or long term has a great deal of impact.
